Fluids and rest for colds — the evidence
The two interventions with no controversy. Fever and a runny nose lose water, and dehydration makes every symptom feel worse. Rest shortens nothing measurably, but sleep is when the immune response does most of its work, and pushing through a cold prolongs the misery even when it does not prolong the virus.
What the evidence says
Verdict: Works. The two interventions with no controversy. Fever and a runny nose lose water, and dehydration makes every symptom feel worse. Rest shortens nothing measurably, but sleep is when the immune response does most of its work, and pushing through a cold prolongs the misery even when it does not prolong the virus.
What to actually do
Drink enough that urine stays pale; warm drinks genuinely help a sore throat and congestion. Sleep more than usual, and keep the bedroom slightly humid — dry air is a sore-throat amplifier. Steamy showers help congestion; antibiotics never will.
